Austin Outdoor Celebrates Earth Day by Enhancing the Landscape at Turkey Lake Park

April 22nd, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. – Austin Outdoor celebrated Earth Day on April 22, 2009, by participating in the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) Day of Service, which is a nationwide event for members of PLANET, a national lawn and landscape association, to organize and participate in volunteer green projects in communities across the country.  Austin Outdoor participated in the Day of Service by coordinating with Keep Orlando Beautiful and Green Up Orlando to enhance the landscape at Bill Frederick @ Turkey Lake Park.

The areas of focus for the landscape to be enhanced were the boathouse and surrounding areas.  While the enhanced landscape was meant to provide a lively environment for visitors using the boathouse and dock at Turkey Lake Park, it also made a difference to Charlie, who works for the city part-time managing the boat rentals.  Charlie took an interest in the appearance of the boathouse area, even bringing in plants of his own to use.  He was excited when he found out that Austin Outdoor was going to further his landscaping efforts.

“It was a boathouse extreme makeover,” said Keep Orlando Beautiful Coordinator Jody Goostree.

Green Up Orlando Manager Janice Rahill added, “Charlie really lit up when he knew Austin Outdoor was coming in.  It really brightened his world.”

Austin Outdoor’s Orlando district of 12 employees participated in the event.  Also, The Bank of New York Mellon employees and the City team joined efforts with Austin Outdoor.  Approximately 100 plants were donated for the project by Austin Outdoor.  Another contribution was made by Cannon Trees, which donated six Live Oak Trees.  The landscape was successful in providing instant shade to the park near the boathouse, parking lot area and rental area.  This was able to reverse the damage caused to the landscape by the 2004 hurricanes.

“They [The Bank of New York Mellon employees and the City team] could not say enough great things about the Austin Outdoor staff and how much environmental, horticultural and other educational things they went away with that day.  For sure it was their best Earth Day ever thanks to Austin Outdoor,” said Rahill.

“This was a meaningful day for our company,” said Austin Outdoor’s Executive Vice President William Dellecker.  “We were able to enhance the aesthetic environment of those within our community as well as have our employees, vendors and other organizations involved in this great cause.  We look forward to Earth Day again next year.”

Austin Outdoor’s other Florida locations in Palm Coast, Jacksonville and Port St. Lucie also participated in the event.  The Palm Coast district worked with the Flagler County Housing Authority to enhance the landscape of nine homes in Bunnell, the Jacksonville district enhanced the landscape at Paxon Middle School, and the Port St. Lucie district enhanced the landscape at the St. Lucie County Administration Building.

Both City of Orlando programs, Keep Orlando Beautiful and Green Up Orlando share a common goal of engaging volunteers to enhance their community through beautification efforts.  For more information, visit www.cityoforlando.net.

Austin Outdoor Celebrates Earth Day by Enhancing the Landscape at Paxon Middle School

April 22nd, 2009

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Austin Outdoor participated in the Day of Service by coordinating with Jacksonville’s Clean It Up Green It Up initiative to enhance the landscape at Paxon Middle School.

The area of focus to enhance the landscape at Paxon Middle School was the courtyard, which is a high-traffic area that leads to three different buildings within the school.  The updated landscape features Washingtonia Palms, Live Oaks, Mondo Grass, Flax Lily, Ilex Shillings, Walter’s Viburnum and annuals for color.

“It’s just beautiful, we love it,” said Cathy Stephens, business partner liaison and PTA president at Paxon Middle School.  “Everyone who has seen it thinks it looks marvelous, and it is a better study environment for the students.”

While Earth Day for this year has come and gone, the impact of the day is ongoing at Paxon Middle School.  Stephens said the students enjoy watering the newly installed plants every day.  In fact, since there is such an interest in watering the plants, the students have to be reminded that the plants shouldn’t be overwatered.  Also, the new landscape provides an adequate environment for science teachers to take their students on nature walks.

Austin Outdoor’s Jacksonville district brought 13 employees to participate in the event.  Also, more than 100 plants were donated for the project by Austin Outdoor.  Another contribution was made by Cannon Trees, which donated the Live Oaks.

“This was a meaningful day for our company,” said Austin Outdoor’s Executive Vice President William Dellecker.  “We were able to enhance the aesthetic environment of those within our community as well as have our employees and vendors involved in this great cause.  We look forward to Earth Day again next year.”
