In today’s competitive landscaping industry, every company is looking for the one additional edge that may push them to the pinnacle of successful bidding and operations. One particular item, which has been used for decades, may just be the edge needed if utilized to its potential. Plant Growth Regulators, when used correctly and diligently, can provide the necessary edge to battle excessive growth which will equate to substantial savings in the following areas:

Labor – Less trimming à Less clean-up.

Travel time – Fewer trips to the property for trimming are made, and this will result in fewer trips to dispose of the material.

Safety – If less trimming is needed, there should be fewer trimming-related accidents. In addition, when travel time is down, there are fewer chances for automobile related accidents.

The Creating Florida-Friendly Communities newsletter by the University of Florida IFAS Extension features success stories about water-saving communities and new and existing communities that take steps to protect water quality, and provide “how to” information on becoming Florida-friendly. Ocean Hammock, a property maintained by Austin Outdoor since 1998, was featured in the April 2010 issue.

Ocean Hammock, a 1,000-acre beachside gated community in Flagler County, saved thousands of dollars through a common-sense, hands-on approach in a major landscape retrofit during the last four years, and credits the University of Florida/IFAS Master Gardener program as a major catalyst for its improvements.

Following a visioning process by the homeowner association board of directors that led the community to realize their common area landscaping was not in synch with their goal to be “regarded as one of the most beautiful and socially inviting resort environments anywhere,” they put Steve Hatcher, Master Gardener and former board member, in charge of a $400,000 beautification project. According to Steve, the board’s vision and support were the key enablers to the success of the project.

He also credits the UF/IFAS Master Gardener program as the impetus for the savings in the project. He and fellow Master Gardener Ann Butler collaborated with a team on the project. “The savings we attained are directly attributable to the training Ann and I received in the Master Gardener program, consultant Louise Leister’s advice, and proactive suggestions made by Austin Outdoor,” Steve said.

Austin Outdoor Enhances the Landscape at Three Parks, One School and One Nonprofit Organization in Celebration of Earth Day & PLANET Day of Service

BUNNELL, Fla. – Austin Outdoor celebrated Earth Day on April 22, 2010, by participating in the Professional Landcare Network (PLANET) Day of Service, which is a nationwide event for members of PLANET, a national lawn and landscape association, to organize and participate in volunteer green projects in communities across the country. Austin Outdoor participated in the Day of Service by coordinating a project in each of its Florida districts.

The East Central Florida district enhanced the landscape at Heroes Memorial Park and Holland Memorial Park, both located in Palm Coast. At Heroes Memorial Park, four memorial circle landscape beds were cleaned out and enhanced with different varieties of sustainable plants. At Holland Memorial Park, the two entrance beds were enhanced. Purple Lantana and yellow Dune Sunflower were installed in the existing landscape beds.

“Professionalism in a profession goes beyond what is required to do a quality job no matter what that job is. It extends to the community and how that individual or business conducts itself on a personal as well as professional basis. The staff at Austin Outdoor exemplifies this in happily giving of their time to spend a morning doing something that does not make any money for the company, gives away plants and uses employee time to help improve the look of our City for the betterment of the community,” said Bill Butler, City of Palm Coast landscape architect. “I saw smiles on the faces of the employees that volunteered at Heroes Park and Holland Park that day and could tell they really enjoyed themselves. Thanks for being a great example of what professionalism really means!”

The Northeast Florida district enhanced the main entrance landscape at Stilwell Middle School in Jacksonville. Austin Outdoor employees worked with employees from Kohl’s by cleaning up the landscape, removing declined hedges, raking out existing beds, creating new beds, and mulching both the new and existing beds. Plants used included Hawthorne, Agapanthus, Evergreen Giant, Jasmine and Ginger.

“You did an excellent job. The staff was very happy, excited and appreciative. It has been my pleasure partnering with you. Thank you for your commitment, time, hard work and donation,” said Vivian Harrell, executive coordinator of Keep Jacksonville Beautiful.

The Central Florida district cleaned up and enhanced the landscape at The Sunshine Foundation Dream Village located in Davenport, which is a nonprofit organization that strives to answer the dreams of chronically ill, seriously ill, physically challenged and abused children ages three to eighteen, whose families are financially unable to fulfill their requests.

“We truly appreciate Austin Outdoor for helping improve the appearance of the Dream Village for the special children served by the Sunshine Foundation, and especially before our Spring Family Fair on May 1st,” said Wanda Curtis, property manager and family liaison for The Sunshine Foundation.

The Southeast Florida district cleaned up and enhanced the landscape at the North Palm Beach County Chamber of Commerce located within Burt Reynolds Park in Jupiter. The team added plant material to the hedge row that runs along the parkway in front of the park. The team installed the following plant material: Cocoplum, Society Garlic, Crotons, Agapanthus and Firebush. In total, seven employees installed 120 plants and performed general landscape cleanup.

“A big thank you to all of the Austin Outdoor staff. The park really looks wonderful, and we are truly grateful that Austin Outdoor selected Palm Beach County Parks for this year’s project,” said Heather Medina, special projects coordinator.
